HopingHands autism guide

Understanding autism

Autism is a lifelong difference in how a person’s brain develops and how they experience, process and respond to the world.

01

A different way of being

Autistic people may communicate, learn, focus, move or respond to sensory information differently. These differences are part of human neurodiversity—not a lack of personality, feeling or potential.

02

Every person is unique

There is no single autistic experience. A person may need significant support in one area and little or none in another. Needs can also change with environment, health and energy.

03

Support starts with listening

The most useful question is not “How do we make someone appear less autistic?” but “What helps this person feel safe, understood and able to participate?”
